Installed XP onto USB HDD, But unable to boot (restarts/solved)

|

After doing all the steps described in this tutorial:

http://www.ngine.de/article/id/8

I am able to install Windows XP SP3 on my external USB HDD, but after the succesfull instalation, when booting for the first time, the computer restarts during boot sequence (I can see the windows logo, and then a BSOD error screen for half a second, after which windows restarts) and then I am able to enter only in safe mode. So XP was installed on that hdd, but I can access it only in safe mode. Every time I try to boot in normal mode, XP restarts.

So I figured to press F8 and pressed 'Disable automatic restart on system failure' to see what it doesn't like and the BSOD error that shows is:

“A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. if this scren appears again, follow these steps:

Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated.

Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

Technical information:

*** STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF7C57528, 0x0000034, 0x0000000, 0x0000000) "

I tried again to reinstall, and then again a clean install after formatting the hdd (again NTFS file system) and the result is the same. What could be wrong? I thought I could use my external usb hdd to boot windows XP on my laptop: Dell Inspiron 5100 (which is without the internal hdd which was removed because it was broken).

So do I have to try another operating system? Or is there a way to make this usb hdd to boot in normal mode with WinXP? (HDD: Smartdisk Firelirte #USBFLB40 with Samsung MP0402H USB Device)

I tried to google:

http://www.google.md/search?hl=ro&q=win ... +boot+&lr=

and

http://www.google.com/search?hl=ro&sour ... =&aq=f&oq=

For 2 days I have read on many forums that a lot of people had their windows restarting during boot sequence (for different reasons), or about the STOP: 0x0000007B error after trying to install Windows XP but I didn't manage to isolate my very problem (about Windows XP on external usb hard drive + STOP: 0x0000007B error and restarting XP during boot because of this bsod error).

So the only thing I can do is to boot in safe mode and try to change/repair from there. But I have no clues. I tried uninstalling ethernet controller, audio card and pci modem: with no luck. I tried to search in the registry, but I didn't find anything wrong. I tried Run -> evenvwr.msc -> System , to search for the errors. I still am not able to isolate my problem, where do I have to start looking for? What can be wrong with my "hard drives or hard drive controllers."?

Thank you for any help in advance.

Updated

It seems I found the solution for my problem: http://www.msfn.org/board/faqs-t116766.html

Q3: I get BSOD 0x0000007B during text mode of Setup.

A3: On some motherboards USB booting is tricky, common example are many Dell systems. Try using a modified NTDETECT.COM as mentioned here: http://www.msfn.org/board/http-msfn-org ... ntry738009 Another reason could be missing mass storage driver. Make sure you have it, or integrate BTS mass storage driver pack ( http://driverpacks.net/ ) in your source.

Now after I've downloaded mass storage drivers from here http://driverpacks.net/driverpacks/wind ... orage/9.01 I'm looking for a way to integrate them in my Windows XP CD installation. I guess first I have to integrate mass storage drivers into the XP installation. And only then to make all the steps described in this tutorial: http://www.ngine.de/article/id/8??
