First Generation iPod vs Zune

|

Remembering the first generation how iPod and Zune came out, it was not long time ago when Apple developed their first iPod 10GB in 2001 while Zune began in 2006 with their 30GB portable digital player.

I own 3 Zunes, and I love them, but even I think Microsoft was too late to the party with Zune:

iPod, 1st Gen - October 2001
iPod, 3rd Gen - April 2003 (10, 15, 20, 30 and 40GB)
iPod, 5th Gen - October 2005 (30, 60, 80GB)
iPod, 6th Gen - September 2007 (80, 120, 160GB)
Zune, 1st Gen - November 2006 (30GB)
Zune, 2nd Gen - November 2007 (80GB)
Zune, 2nd Gen - November 2008 (120GB)

The first Zune was 5 years after the first iPod, and the iPod already had larger capacities at least a year earlier.

iPod Nano, 1st Gen - September 2005
iPod Nano, 2nd Gen - September 2006 (2, 4 and 8GB)
iPod Nano, 4th Gen - September 2008 (4, 8 and 16GB)
Zune, 2nd Gen Flash - November 2007 (4 and 8GB)
Zune, 2nd Gen Flash - September 2008 (16GB)

The only time the Zune was "in step" with the iPod was the 16GB Nano and the 16GB flash Zune came out at the same time.

iPod Touch, 1st Gen - September 2007
ZuneHD - September 2009

Still too late. MS was still releasing players with buttons when Apple was releasing a touch player. The only thing the Zune had before the iPod was FM. The iPod Nano didn't get it until the 5th Gen Nano in 2009.

MS waited too long to get into the market to really be a player. And as much as I love my WP7 phone, I'm afraid they may havea waited too long on that as well. I hope not, I hope that MS really promotes WP7 way more than they ever did the Zune.
