The TP-Link WR740n is an even lower-cost (around 20€ retail in 9/2010) variant of the tl-wr741nd differing only in the non-removable antenna.
Installation
The trunk WR740nd image works unmodified and it can be flashed through the stock TP-Link web interface.
Flashing using TFTP
Flashing using tftp works with the steps described in tftp.install.
The serial headers are not completely connected (a voltage divider and capacitor are left out, so the headers are dead), but a serial connection can still be established by soldering directly to two of the empty pads. The result is a bit unstable (router output is often partially lost) and can probably be improved electrically.
Other stuff
The HW in 740N is similar to 741N, so, most of the contents in tl-wr741nd applies to this router.
