Thin is in, just in case you haven’t noticed. It’s hard not to, with Apple pushing its newly refreshed MacBook Air models to the masses and Intel counter-punching with an ultrabook form factor for Windows-based PCs (all the while serving both sides, just like a boxing promoter). Wondering where Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) fits into the equation? It doesn’t.

Thinnest Ultrabook

Not by necessity, mind you, but by choice. AMD’s answer to ultrabooks is its ultrathin platform, which are thin-and-light notebooks built around either the chip maker’s E-Series accelerated processing units (APUs), otherwise known as Brazos 2.0, or Trinity (A-Series). Other than the processor, there aren’t any hard and fast rules for notebook makers to follow, as there are with ultrabooks.

Advanced Micro Devices hopes to provide thin-and-light laptops that are less expensive but equally speedy to Intel's ultrabooks with its new A-series chips, which the company officially announced on Tuesday.

The A-series chips, code-named Trinity, will enable laptops to be made that are comparable in size, weight and battery life to Intel's ultrabooks, said John Taylor, director of global product marketing at AMD. Users won't have to pay "premium prices" for Trinity ultrathin laptops, which will be significantly cheaper than Intel's ultrabooks.

Ultrabooks have yet to take off, but Intel is already looking at ways to shave dollars off the cost of these thin and light devices.

Thinnest Ultrabook

Intel engineers have come up with a design that allows Ultrabook shells to be built using a plastic as opposed to the metal that has been used so far. This is a move that could cut anywhere between $25 and $75 from the price, reports Reuters.

The problem with Ultrabooks is that while Intel aspires for these devices to have a starting price in the region of $699, most will be priced at $1,000 and beyond, pushing them into the premium category and putting them in direct competition with hardware from Apple.

Qualcomm hopes its success and experience in the mobile phone market will translate into worth competition for Intel's massive ultrabook push. The San Diego chip giant is preparing a line of ARM-based processors for super-thin notebooks and/or tablets running Windows 8.
