A leading U.S. newspaper reports U.S. geologists have discovered nearly one trillion dollars' worth of untapped mineral deposits in Afghanistan.


The New York Times says U.S. officials believe the vast veins of iron, copper, cobalt, gold, lithium, and niobium could "fundamentally alter" the Afghan economy and perhaps the Afghan war. U.S. officials told the newspaper Afghanistan could eventually be transformed into one of the "most important mining centers in the world."

The recent findings of a geological team in Afghanistan could lead the country into one of its most economically tumultuous yet fruitful eras. A team of American geologists and Pentagon officials who were surveying the country in search of some sort of mineral deposit found something greater than they’d imagined could be out there: Almost $1 trillion dollars in untapped minerals including iron, copper, cobalt, gold, and great quantities of lithium, an essential metal for making batteries and other tech devices.


A trillion dollars worth of untapped metal is just as important as it sounds, if not more, and the speculation is that this will be the biggest industrial and economical breakthrough in the nation’s history. It could completely transform how the country is viewed and how it interacts internationally.

A US survey has uncovered at least one trillion dollars in mineral deposits in Afghanistan, officials said Monday, but there are doubts as to how the war-torn and graft-prone country can manage the windfall.


The study by US geologists found that Afghanistan had reserves of valuable minerals on a much larger scale than previously believed, a Pentagon spokesman said.

The value of the minerals -- including lithium, iron, gold, niobium and cobalt -- was estimated at nearly one trillion dollars, according to the study. But that was a conservative estimate, Colonel Dave Lapan told reporters.

Finally, Afghanistan could use a break. On June 13th, the U.S. announced the discovery of nearly $1 trillion in untapped mineral deposits in Afghanistan, far beyond any proven reserves. Five days later, Afghanistan’s mining minister, said that mineral deposits in his country could be worth up to three trillion dollars, triple the US estimate from earlier in the week.


“A very conservative estimate has been one trillion. Our estimation is more than that, the idea is it could be up to three trillion dollars” mining minister Waheedullah Shahrani told a news conference in Kabul.

Facebook leaked keys to account data: Symantec

SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) – US computer security firm Symantec has said that Facebook accidentally left a door open for advertisers to access profiles, pictures, chat and other private data at the social network.

Facebook told AFP that there was no evidence anyone stepped through that door and swiped any information from the accounts of its more than 500 million members.

Symantec discovered that certain Facebook applications leaked tokens that act essentially as "spare keys" for accessing profiles, reading messages, posting to walls or other actions.

Facebook applications are Web software programs that are integrated onto the leading online social network's platform. Symantec said that 20 million Facebook applications, such as games, are installed every day.

"We appreciate Symantec raising this issue and we worked with them to address it immediately," Facebook said in response to an AFP inquiry.

The tokens were being leaked to third-party applications including advertisers and analytics platforms, allowing them to post messages or mine personal information from profiles, according to Nishant Doshi of Symantec.

"Fortunately, these third-parties may not have realized their ability to access this information," Doshi said in a blog post.

"We have reported this issue to Facebook, who has taken corrective action to help eliminate this issue."

Symantec estimated that as of April, nearly 100,000 applications were giving away keys to Facebook profiles.

"We estimate that over the years, hundreds of thousands of applications may have inadvertently leaked millions of access tokens to third parties," Doshi said.

Facebook confirmed the problem, which was discovered by Doshi and Symantec colleague Candid Wueest, according to the computer security firm.

But Facebook said the Symantec report had a few "inaccuracies."

There was no evidence that the problem resulted in private information being gleaned from Facebook members' accounts, according to the California-based social networking service.

Twitter feed lawsuit underscores power of a tweet

SAN FRANCISCO – When Adorian Deck was home sick from high school, he entertained himself like countless other teenagers have in recent years: He started a Twitter account.

Unlike other teenagers, Deck's account became a sensation. Deck, under the handle (at)OMGFacts, tweeted random bits of celebrity gossip and quirky trivia. In less than a year, he had attracted more than 300,000 followers.

Now Deck, 17, is suing a business partner who promised to take OMG Facts to the next level, but who the Northern California teen says deceived him into turning over the rights to his creation.

"It was kind of a slow process of realizing what exactly was going on," Deck said. "I was starting to lose more and more control."

A federal lawsuit over rights to a Twitter feed might sound like a case of bringing a grenade launcher to a squirrel hunt. But the court fight over OMG Facts reminds that the power of a tweet can extend well beyond 140 characters.

For both sides, the dispute is not so much over who can claim any of the more than 5,500 tweets to the (at)OMGFacts account as who owns the rights to the potentially lucrative OMG Facts brand.

Emerson Spartz, 24, the defendant in the case, declined to comment on the ownership issue directly because of the pending litigation. But he says OMG Facts would have nowhere near its current popularity without his efforts.

Spartz first caught the media's attention as the founder of mugglenet.com, one of the world's most popular Harry Potter fan sites, which he started when he was 12. He went on to start Spartz Inc., an Internet media company that oversees a network of sites aimed at a young audience.

Spartz says that since partnering with Deck in February 2010, Spartz Inc. built a popular OMG Facts website, developed a heavily subscribed YouTube channel and researched and wrote nearly every tweet on (at)OMGFacts.

"Mr. Deck has hardly lifted a finger throughout most of the growth of OMG Facts, but people have been telling him he's a genius for so long now that he's starting to believe it," Spartz said.

Deck disputes that he stopped tweeting. Undisputed is the ongoing surge in (at)OMGFacts' popularity.

Rootkit-based Exploits Could Eavesdrop Smartphones

Computer scientists at Rutgers University this week are demonstrating ways that rootkits can attack new generations of smart mobile phones. The researchers, who are presenting their findings at a mobile computing workshop in Maryland, are showing how a rootkit could cause a smartphone to eavesdrop on a meeting, track its owner’s travels, or rapidly drain its battery to render the phone useless — all without the user’s knowledge.

“Smartphones are essentially becoming regular computers,” says Vinod Ganapathy, assistant professor of computer science in Rutgers’ School of Arts and Sciences. “They run the same class of operating systems as desktop and laptop computers, so they are just as vulnerable to attack by [malware].”

Ganapathy and computer science professor Liviu Iftode worked with three students to study the use of rootkits in smartphone operating systems. They note that while many PCs carry virtual machine monitors to help detect rootkits, most smartphones cannot support a VM monitor.

Rootkit attacks on smartphones — or upcoming tablet computers — could be more devastating because smartphone owners tend to carry their phones with them all of the time, the researchers say. This creates opportunities for potential attackers to eavesdrop, extract personal information from phone directories, or just pinpoint a user’s whereabouts by querying the phone’s GPS receiver. Smartphones also have new ways for malware to enter the system, such as through a Bluetooth radio channel or via text message.

“What we’re doing today is raising a warning flag,” Iftode says. “We’re showing that people with general computer proficiency can create rootkit malware for smartphones. The next step is to work on defenses.”

In one test, the researchers showed how a rootkit could turn on a phone’s microphone without the owner knowing it happened. In such a case, an attacker would send an invisible text message to the infected phone, telling it to place a call and turn on the microphone, such as when the phone’s owner is in a meeting and the attacker wants to eavesdrop.

In another test, they demonstrated a rootkit that responds to a text query for the phone’s location as furnished by its GPS receiver. This would enable an attacker to track the owner’s whereabouts.

In a third test, the researchers showed a rootkit turning on power-hungry capabilities — such as the Bluetooth radio and GPS receiver — to quickly drain the battery.

The researchers are careful to note they did not assess the vulnerability of specific types of smartphones. They did their work on a phone used primarily by software developers versus commercial phone users. Working within a legitimate software development environment, they deliberately inserted rootkit malware into the phone to study its potential effects.

Mobile Malware Exploits on the Way, Experts Say

IDG News Service — Smartphone exploits are coming, as cybercriminals start to figure out how to make money by hacking mobile devices, two mobile security experts said Tuesday.

While mobile malware is still in its infancy, security vendors have seen a huge uptick in mobile attacks since late last year, said Tim Armstrong, a malware analyst at Kaspersky Lab, a Moscow-based cybersecurity vendor. Kaspersky Lab identified more than 1,550 mobile malware signatures in September, he said.

While many people have been predicting mobile malware for a while, "this might actually, finally, be the year," Armstrong said during a meeting of the Messaging Anti-Abuse Working Group in Arlington, Virginia. "It's only a matter of time before we see some really huge malware infections."

Right now, Nokia's Symbian operating system, popular outside the U.S., is the major target for mobile exploits, but Apple's iPhone and Android phones are likely to be growing targets, added Jarno Niemela, a senior researcher with F-Secure, a Helsinki-based security vendor.

In many cases, early attempts at smartphone exploits have lacked complexity, Niemela said. But both Niemela and Armstrong predicted that smartphone exploits will become more sophisticated and more common.

"These guys still are amateurs," Niemela said. "That's going to change when some of them strike gold."

Niemela and Armstrong provided several examples of already-attempted exploits during a talk on mobile malware.

One ploy targeted the Android platform with a fake movie player, with one version of the player billed as a pornography movie player. When Android users downloaded the app, which was available from a website not affiliated with Google's (GOOG) Android Marketplace, the fake media player installed an SMS (Short Message Service) exploit that sent out premium-priced SMSes, costing about US$5 each, without the phone owner's knowledge.

That scam was limited to Russian Android users, but it set an important precedent, Armstrong said. The criminals targeted small transactions, expecting that mobile-phone users, or more likely the employers paying the mobile-phone bills, wouldn't notice, he said.

"The cheapness of [the scam] was kind of an important factor in making it work," he added.

The way SMS works limits criminals to targeting people in their own country, but a potential growing area in mobile-phone malware is a premium international calling scam, Niemela said. The exploit works the same as the SMS scam -- a user downloads an infected app -- but instead of sending premium SMSes, the compromised phone makes international long-distance calls, often once a month in the middle of the night, he said.

The per-minute charges for those calls can be several dollars, with the malware writer and a company that owns international premium rate numbers sharing in the profits. Again, with the malware making a limited number of calls each month, the company paying its employees' mobile-phone bills might not notice, he said.

"How many people here see their bill?" Niemela asked. In an audience of more than 100 people, no one raised a hand.

Other exploits for smartphones include fake applications that trick people into paying for them, and offers that include monthly charges in the fine print, similar to other online scams, Niemela said.

Some fake applications have been focused on banking apps, Niemela said. "That's scary," he added. "Those could have just as easily been banking Trojans."

Security researchers have also noticed scams where criminals are combining the Zeus Trojan, which typically steals personal information from PCs, with a mobile component, he said. In one case, criminals targeted customers of a bank in Spain.

The Zeus Trojan inserted a field on the bank's website asking for the user's SMS information and phone number. The criminals then sent a message to the customer's mobile phone, saying that their mobile-phone operating system needed to be updated. When customers downloaded the update, a Trojan was installed on their phone.[source]

'I like it' campaign on Facebook goes viral

(Mashable) -- If you're confused because your Facebook News Feed is filled with women saying that they "like it on" the floor or the kitchen counter, you're not alone. It's all part of a new Internet meme that has gone viral on Facebook to raise awareness for breast cancer.

First things first, though: These women are actually referring to where they like to place their purses, not to their favorite places to make love. Of course, part of the reason this meme has gone viral is due to its heavy sexual connotations.

The reason for all of these "I like it on" status updates is simple: October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of women are using this meme as a rallying cry to raise awareness for cancer research.

The status updates naturally get their friends to ask them about their commentary, which is exactly the point of this meme.

Like any social platform, Facebook is susceptible to rapidly spreading memes. In January bra color status updates started dominating newsfeeds worldwide, again to raise awareness for breast cancer.

While we don't know where the campaign originated from, it's cute, fun and generating some buzz (especially useful, as the commenters point out, for getting women to go in for their medical examinations).

Cisco Umi brings videoconferencing to the living room

(CNET) -- Cisco Systems on Wednesday unveiled Cisco Umi, its consumer-focused telepresence offering that lets people connect to each other using videoconferencing on their HD television in their living rooms.

Cisco Umi (pronounced YOU-me) is a telecommunications system that requires a mix of Cisco hardware and hardware you'll already need to own.

The Umi service includes a Cisco-issued high-definition camera with an embedded microphone, a set-top box, and a remote, but you'll need your own HD TV (1080p) and Internet connection to use it.

There is no external microphone, but you can recalibrate the audio quality. Cisco's algorithms cancel external noice and bring the voices in the foreground.

Video calls and video messages are at the center of the Umi service, but the remote will also let customers manage their contact list, profiles, and settings. In addition, Umi will also record videos capable of being uploaded to Facebook and YouTube, or attached in an e-mail message.

Umi's VoIP element is also strong, with the ability to place and receive video calls from friends and family from other programs equipped with VoIP video calling, specifically Google video chat.

In addition, Umi has certain user controls that will allow owners to block unwanted callers, and lock the Umi system so that others can't use it in your absence.

There's also a privacy shutter that clicks off the camera and goes into audio-only mode for those moments that aren't fit to be viewed. If 1080p isn't available, Umi will adapt the bandwidth to drop down to 720p or even 480p quality.

As analysts predicted, the hardware alone will cost $599, with a $24.99 monthly service fee. Cisco will make Umi available on November 14 at Best Buy, with preorders beginning today.

The hardware components will also be available at Magnolia Home theater. In addition, Cisco and Verizon will bring Umi to Verizon Fios fiber-optic network customers early in 2011.

Meanwhile. peripherals maker Logitech has its own HD video-calling product coming out today at the company's announcement of Logitech Revue with Google TV.

"We believe consumers want the best and most seamless experience which means HD video calling not only from TV to TV, but also TV to PC or Mac (or vice versa)," Erik Kintz, VP and general manager of Logitech's video business, said in a statement.

"We also believe consumers will want a free service and one that is integrated into a broader entertainment experience, which is why Logitech is excited to introduce an integrated HD video calling offering with Google TV."

Cisco will market its Umi system with a mall tour to give prospective customers a chance to try the product hands-on. The $600 price point could be a hard sell for casual users accustomed to free VoIP services like Skype.

In addition, Cisco will likely air commercials featuring Canadian actress Ellen Page, in a reprisal of her role in a series of ads to promote Cisco's telepresence for business.

In reaction to Cisco's Umi, Skype invoked Moore's Law, the essence of which is that technology gets faster, smaller, and cheaper over time.

"Buy a $599 device and it can be subject to obsoletism at the hands of mass-market options that sell for 1/2, then 1/4, and eventually 1/10 the price. And, when unbeatable lower cost, high performance options are readily available, spending at the top-end can be like throwing money away, especially if you are buying a video calling system and there is no one else to call," Skype's Jonathan Christensen said in a blog post.[source]

Parent survey says social networks don't protect kids' privacy

(CNN) -- Most parents think their children share too much information online -- and that search engines and social networks aren't doing enough to protect privacy, according to poll results released Friday.

More than 90 percent of the parents surveyed by Zogby International said they are "concerned" that their children share too much information online, and 75 percent said they would rate the job social networks are doing to protect online privacy as "negative."

The results, released by the nonprofit advocacy organization Common Sense Media -- which commissioned the poll -- do not mention particular social networks or websites by name.

Common Sense Media CEO James Steyer said the need for reform is clear.

"Parents want far more education and leadership about online privacy, and they clearly want the industry and the federal government to update privacy policies," Steyer said in a statement.

The organization begins a campaign Monday aimed at protecting kids' personal information and reputations online.

"We need a 'Do Not Track Kids' approach' similar to the 'Do Not Call' policies that restrict telemarketers," Steyer said.

The results also include a survey of 401 teenagers aged 15 to 18. Common Sense Media said 79 percent of the teens surveyed also think their friends share too much personal information online, and 85 percent of them want search engines and social networking sites to ask for permission before using personal information to market products.

"The poll results present a clear divide between the industry's view of privacy and the opinion of parents and kids," Steyer said.

To conduct the online poll of parents, Zogby International used a sampling of 2,100 adults from its online panel, which the polling firm says is representative of the adult population of the United States. The sampling margin of error is 2.2 percentage points.

When glass touch screens feel like sandpaper

(CNN) -- Glass screens that can feel the touch of your fingers are all the rage these days. You'll find them in all kinds of gadgets, from smartphones to tablet computers.

But the way Chris Harrison and a team of Disney Researchers see it, there's one huge problem with this technology: All glass screens feel exactly the same.

So, OK, that "problem" may not be keeping you up at night. But think about the difference between typing on a hardware keyboard, where you can feel whether your fingers are hitting the right keys, and a touch screen keyboard, where the letters "q" and "w" feel exactly the same -- as does the space between them.

That's the problem Harrison, a researcher at Disney and a Ph.D. student at Carnegie Mellon University, is hoping to solve with a new technology he and Disney Research are calling "TeslaTouch."

This new type of touch screen, which was demonstrated for the first time at a tech conference in New York this week, uses a small static force to control friction between a user's finger and the touch screen.

"It's kind of like a buzzing or a vibration. It has the same effect as a buzz," he said. "But if you carefully tune the frequency and the vibration of the panel you can actually create things that feel like sandpaper or rubber or a wall."

In the case of a touch screen keyboard -- like those on the Apple iPhone, for example -- users would be able to feel the location of the keys, and could learn to "touch type" without looking at their hands, he said.

When people clicked on a file to drag it into a folder, they would be able to feel the weight of the file and would know, through their sense of touch, that it had landed in the appropriate location, he said. Larger files, like HD movies, could also be made to seem heavier than small files, like text documents, he said.

"A heavier document, like one that's going to take longer to transfer, is going to feel heavier," he said.

Unlike other attempts at touch-screen technology with "haptic feedback," or impulses that stimulate the sense of touch, TeslaTouch has no moving parts. It uses small electrical impulses -- kind of like those involved in static cling -- to create a pull and push between a person's fingertip and the gadget's screen.

Here are some of the nerdy details: The touch screen is made up of three layers. A glass plate, topped with a transparent electrode and an insulator, is what people touch. To simulate friction and texture, the electrode creates small electrical fields in the insulation layer. These fields oscillate between positive and negative charges, creating those sensations.

Others have tried to use vibrations to make touch-sensitive screens feel more realistic. The BlackBerry Storm's screen, for example, compresses and clicks when users push on it successfully.

But that doesn't allow for users to touch different parts of the screen and receive different touch sensations, Harrison said. That is possible with TeslaTouch.

The Disney Research technology, which has not been commercialized, has been incorporated by Harrison into at least two prototypes. One mobile device was demonstrated this week at a conference held by the Association for Computing Machinery. Another touch screen table is working at the Disney Research offices in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he said.

Products with TeslaTouch could be on the market in six months to a year, and the technology would add little cost -- perhaps $1 or $2 -- to the price of a mobile phone, he said.

He said this technology isn't the "magic bullet" that will bring multitouch, tactile touch screens into the mainstream. But it may move them one step closer.[source]

Hack Delivers a Linux Tablet for Under $200

Hackers have created a sub $200 Linux-based tablet device, all thanks to a little tinkering with an Internet Media Display.

The device used to create this basic tablet was the Insignia Infocast — a simple $170 Chumby-powered Linux media device that was originally designed to share pictures and display information from the Web.

Out of the box the 8-inch Insignia Infocast houses an 800MHz processor, 128MB of DDR2 memory, 2GB of storage, and an LCD touchscreen. It also packs in two USB ports and built in Wi-Fi. But hackers have discovered that, despite the device's limited capabilities out-of-the-box, it can do far more than just run the closed environment offered by the default Chumby operating system (OS).

A recent mod shows how hackers are tweaking the fairly inexpensive tablet to run a WebKit browser, making it much more usable for general Web surfing. The mod also lets you use an external keyboard with the Infocast.

Performing the hack is apparently a fairly easy process. According to the Bunnie Studios blog--home of Chumby co-founder Bunnie Huang--some modders are working on getting Google's Android OS playing nicely on the touch enabled device.

One things for sure, this is no iPad or Galaxy Tab, especially considering the Insignia Infocast has no built-in battery, but for the comparitively low cost of entry it could well be a viable yet incredibly basic option for some.[source]

Android to challenge Nokia's Symbian by 2014: Gartner

WASHINGTON (AFP) – Google's open-source Android will become the number two mobile operating system this year, leapfrogging BlackBerry and challenging market leader Nokia's Symbian by 2014, a research firm said Friday.

The technology firm Gartner said Symbian and Android will account for 59.8 percent of mobile operating system (OS) sales by 2014.

"Symbian will remain at the top of Gartner's worldwide OS ranking due to Nokia's volume and the push into more mass market price points," Gartner said.

"However, by the end of the forecast period, the number one spot will be contested with Android, which will be at a very similar share level," it said.

According to Gartner, Symbian will hold a 40.1 percent OS market share at the end of 2010 followed by Android with 17.7 percent, Research in Motion's BlackBerry with 17.5 percent, Apple with 15.4 percent for the iOS used by the iPhone and Windows Mobile from Microsoft with 4.7 percent.

By 2014, Symbian's share will fall to 30.2 percent while Android's will rise to 29.6 percent followed by Apple with 14.9 percent, Blackberry with 11.7 percent and Windows with 3.9 percent, Gartner forecast.

Symbian last year had a 46.9 percent share of the OS market followed by Blackberry with 19.9 percent, Apple with 14.4 percent, Windows with 8.7 percent and Android with 3.9 percent, Gartner said.

Gartner said it expected handset manufacturers such as Samsung to launch a number of budget devices in the second half of the year using Android and for other players such as Sony Ericsson, LG and Motorola to follow suit.

"This trend should help Android become the top OS in North America by the end of 2010," Gartner said.

Nokia on Friday named Stephen Elop, a former Microsoft executive, to head the Finnish telecom giant as it battles slumping profits and an eroding market share in the smartphone segment.[source]

Android Goes from Underdog to Top Dog: Watch Out, Apple

Android's meteoritic rise to the top. According to market researcher Gartner, Google's fledgling open-source mobile operating system, barely a blip on the wireless radar a year ago, will grab the No. 2 spot in global market share by the end of 2010. Even more stunning is Gartner's prediction that Android will rival Symbian as the world's top mobile OS by 2014.

Certainly, Android phone manufacturers (and fans) will welcome Gartner's four-year forecast, which doesn't offer today's leading mobile OS vendors, Research In Motion (RIM) and Nokia, much to celebrate.

A Black Eye for BlackBerry

BlackBerry-maker RIM takes the hardest punch. RIM, which owned almost 20 percent of the global mobile market in 2009, will see that share nearly halved to 11.7 percent by 2014, Gartner predicts. And Nokia, which sells millions of Symbian-based phones (particularly in developing countries like India) won't be thrilled by the forecast either. Symbian, which owned nearly 47 percent of the global market in 2009, will plummet to around 30 percent four years from now.

For Android, however, the news is grand. Not only will it nudge RIM out of second place by the end of 2010, but it also run head-to-head with Symbian within four years-each with a 30 percent share. (Gartner gives Symbian the slight edge, however.)

Open Source Rules

The mobile market will favor open-source operating systems (i.e., Android and Symbian) over single-source platforms such as Apple's iOS and RIM's BlackBerry OS. While mobile sales for Apple and RIM will continue to rise, they won't be high enough to boost the platforms' global shares. Apple, for instance, will have about 15 percent of the market by 2014, a half-point drop from today, says the forecast.

Gartner is the second research firm this week to predict a rosy future for Android. IDC also forecasts that Android will rise to second place by 2014, although it expects Symbian to retain a comfortable lead--33 percent to Android's 25 percent.

The Wildcard: Windows Phone

One notable difference between the Gartner and IDC forecasts concerns Microsoft's Windows Phone platform. Gartner predicts Windows Phone will be an also-ran in four years with a meager 4-percent share, while IDC gives Microsoft's OS a healthy 9.8 percent of the market-just a point behind iOS, in fact.

T-Mobile Will Offer Wi-Fi Calling on Android Smartphones

T-Mobile is working to push its Wi-Fi calling technology deeper into the marketplace. It will soon offer built-in Wi-Fi calling capabilities in many of its Android-powered smartphones.

T-Mobile will begin the Wi-Fi calling rollout with smartphones like the T-Mobile myTouch and the Motorola DEFY with MOTOBLUR. T-Mobile is no stranger to Wi-Fi. The company reports it already hosts about 40 million Wi-Fi calls each month.

This is all part of Unlicensed Mobile Access, or UMA, technology. T-Mobile has remained committed to UMA, and it has offered the company a competitive advantage against larger carriers. The Wi-Fi calling for Android is powered by Kineto's Smart Wi-Fi application. The Wi-Fi capabilities make way for both voice calling and text messaging from 802.11 b/g/n access points around the world.

UMA Pros and Cons

"Wi-Fi calling hasn't been much of a competitive advantage for T-Mobile in the past," said Michael Gartenberg, an analyst at Gartner. "Most people don't even know T-Mobile is still using UMA technology. T-Mobile hasn't really promoted it in quite some time. But it's a nice addition to its Android devices, and it's a nice feature if you are a T-Mobile customer."

Torrie Dorrell, vice president of T-Mobile's connected family products and services division, said adding Wi-Fi calling to Android smartphones is part of the company's effort to enhance indoor coverage. The Wi-Fi capability means calls will flow between Wi-Fi and cellular networks, making up for spotty cell networks during the transition from outdoors to indoors.

T-Mobile has been offering the service since June 2007, but is making it available for Android phones for the first time. T-Mobile already offers Wi-Fi calling on devices such as the Nokia E73 Mode, BlackBerry Curve 8520, BlackBerry Bold 9700, and the new BlackBerry Curve 3G.

No Competitive Advantage

"The Wi-Fi calling is lacking some things. For example, if you walk out of the range of your Wi-Fi signal, it's not going to automatically reconnect to the cellular network," Gartenberg said. "It's a useful feature, but it's probably not going to move the dial very much. The other carriers offer different types of technology that allow you accomplish the same thing in your home."

Still, T-Mobile is pushing the message hard for businesses customers. The company feels its UMA technology is a strong benefit for small businesses and multinational companies alike, and said both groups have been leveraging its Wi-Fi calling to slash domestic and international minute usage and drive greater productivity.

In addition to the Android Wi-Fi features, T-Mobile is also expected to roll out a prepaid data-plan package this week. News reports suggest T-Mobile will offer 100MB of data a month for $10 on a prepaid basis, 300MB for $30, or 1GB $50. T-Mobile currently offers 1GB for $39 in one of its standard plans.[source]

Skype Calls Over 3G Hacked Already

Skype is the undisputed best free (for the most part) Voip software available, but when they released their latest Android application they removed 3G calling for everyone in the USA. Well that feature has been hacked and re-enabled by one of our members by the name of xeudoxus, who I have been talking to and he says this was quite simple and took him a matter of 15 minutes to do it.

To install this, simply download the apk that's in the thread, copy and paste it in your memory card and install it using a fill manager application. When it is done installing go to the application and call us to tell us how awesome it runs.

Motorola sues Apple over 18 patents

Technology giant Motorola has filed suit against Apple, claiming the company’s iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, and particular Macintosh computers violate a total of 18 Motorola patents. The complaints center on technology related to GPRS and Wi-Fi technology, along with WCDMA (3G) wireless communication and wireless antenna design; other alleged infringements concern Apple’s MobileMe cloud-based subscription service and Apple’s App Store.

“Motorola has innovated and patented throughout every cycle of the telecommunications industry evolution, from Motorola’s invention of the cell phone to its development of premier smartphone products, said Motorola Mobility corporate VP Kirk Dailey, in a statement. “After Apple’s late entry into the telecommunications market, we engaged in lengthy negotiations, but Apple has refused to take a license. We had no choice but to file these complaints to halt Apple’s continued infringement.”

The complaints relate to what Motorola characterizes as “early state innovations” that it claims Apple uses in several of its products, including technology related to wireless email, proximity sensing, device synchronization, software application management, and location-based services.

In addition to patent infringement claims, Motorola has also filed a complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission. Motorola is seeking unspecified damages and wants a ban on Apple importing or selling the allegedly-infringing products in the U.S. market. The ITC complaint and portions of the patent infringement complaints was filed by Motorola Mobility—Motorola’s phone-making unit—before a District Court in Chicago. The remaining patent infringement complaints were filed in Chicago and Miami.

Motorola’s suit comes just after the company found itself the target of a patent infringement suit from Microsoft over its Android-based smartphones.[source]
